Fallkniven NL5 Idun
In Norse mythology, Idun was the goddess of fertility and was responsible for guarding the apples that ensured the gods eternal youth. For many she was also a symbol of love and rebirth, and in a famous poem she was referred to as the lover of the gods (ása leika). Unlike previous models of knives in the Northern Lights series, the NL5 is a bit rounder and softer in form, and therefore an excellent choice as a hunting knife. The straight, fairly generous leather grip offers ultimate control over the strong VG10 laminated blade. The NL5L is both attractive and effective especially in the hands of the experienced hunter. When it comes to the Northern Light series, nothing has been spared to make this knife as strong, beautiful and comfortable as possible. The knife is a joy to behold and a thrill to use.
The laminated blade is forged with a VG10W steel tip to which we have added tungsten (W). In general, the addition of tungsten means that the tip becomes substantially more compact and maintains sharpness better, at least that's what our own tests showed. And the sides are made of tough, fully stainless steel 420J2. This excellent combination of metals combines all possible and desirable knife properties, including elasticity, torque resistance and edge strength, all in a single blade.
The 5mm thick blade itself is strong enough for all reasonable tasks, but with the laminate technology one can expect an additional 20% strength in the form of bending strength compared to an unlaminated VG10 blade.
The beautiful handle is made of specially selected oxide that gives a sure and sturdy grip. It ages gracefully and develops an attractive brown patina over the years. The handle is unaffected by oils and solvents and impervious to water. When the oxide dries, small cracks may appear on the handle, but they disappear when the knife is put back into use.
We at Fallkniven believe that the curved edge is the ultimate combination of cutting performance and edge strength. Anyone who knows anything about knife making knows that such an edge can only be made by hand, which is why 99.99% of all knives do not have this kind of edge. Machines play a big part in how knives are made, and robots and CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) mills shape the blades as best they can. The machines are filled with stacks of raw blades so that production can go on 24 hours a day and the result is very often quite good. Well, good for the price anyway. However, if you want top drawer strength, tremendous corrosion resistance, edge durability, and custom design, no machine can come close to the craftsmanship of a trained and skilled knifemaker. We are therefore very proud to introduce our Northern Light range, even though we know that only the most discerning knife user will appreciate its features.
Each knife in the Northern Lights series comes with a high quality black leather sheath.
